Root canal surgery is a painless procedure, performed in the dental office, using the same local anesthetic that is used for fillings. The procedure is performed when traditional root canal treatment alone is not able to eliminate the infection in the bone above the tooth, or when endodontic retreatment is not appropriate.

At the completion of the procedure, you will be given both written and verbal instructions regarding home care, diet, etc. Afterwards, you will be expected to go home, relax and apply an ice pack to your face periodically, for the remainder of the day. Some facial swelling and mild to moderate soreness and discomfort is anticipated for several days following the procedure.

You will be scheduled to return within 5-7 days after surgery for a post-operative check-up and removal of stitches. If you have had traditional root canal therapy prior to your surgical procedure, it may be necessary for you to return to your regular dentist for a permanent restoration (filling or crown) after the removal of the stitches.

Please be sure to note the time and date of your appointment. A significant amount of time has been set aside by the doctor and staff for your surgical procedure. It is very important that your appointment be kept. If you find you must change your appointment, a minimum of 24 hours notice is required.
