It is not unusual to experience pain or discomfort for several days following endodontic treatment. Generally, over the counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), acetaminophen (Tylenol), naproxen (Aleve), or aspirin will be effective (if you are allowed to take them). Sometimes pain may be significant. You may take prescribed pain medicine if necessary. Prescription pain medicines may cause drowsiness, so avoid alcohol, driving or operating dangerous equipment if you are taking them. If you have been given an antibiotic prescription, it is important that you fill it immediately and follow the instructions on the bottle carefully and completely. It is important to avoid chewing on the treated tooth and to avoid hard or chewy foods between visits. Rinsing every hour or two with very warm salt water (a full glass of water mixed with about a half teaspoon of salt) will help ease soreness. It is best to avoid placing heat on the face, as this may increase facial swelling.

Please call our office if you have pain that is not relieved by pain medication, if your symptoms do not improve after a few days or if significant swelling develops.

It is essential that you keep your next appointment. Missed appointments cause delays in treatment, which may lead to complications such as the return of infection, pain, or even loss of the tooth. When we give our patients an appointment, we are scheduling time in the doctor's schedule specifically to be spent with you. Failure to keep an appointment or give at least 24 hours notice of cancellation means we cannot offer your time to another patient who may seriously be in need of it. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated by us and your fellow patients who may need our help.
